How to restore a metal piece?
Hey,
My friend owns a plumbing plant and I found an unused piece of machinery metal that actually looks like a sculpture left behind. I would like to preserve it and make it last. It definately has rust over most of it, but maybe only .5-1 centimeters at the most.
How can I preserve this metal piece so it will almost never fall apart? To be honest, the first avenue I am thinkin about would be to sand it and wipe it down with WD-40. Please help, this means a lot. Is that a wise idea? Thanks!
Steel wool or a steel wire brush and WD-40 may remove most if not all the rust.
To preserve the piece so that it can't rust again you would need to season the surface much in the same way that cast iron cookware is seasoned. A coating of oil, grease or even wax rubbed into every surface will block exposure to the air and humidity thus preventing it from oxidizing. WD-40 has limited rust proofing capabilities as it's such a thin oil that tends to evaporate rather quickly. It works but would need to be reapplied more frequently than the other heavier oils, greases or wax.
